King has spoken about the harms of vaping products in the past with some arguing that he’s not done enough to recognized the harm reduction benefits that could be attributed to vaping.

According to reporting from Filter Mag, Califf wrote in a letter to FDA staff that King “has an extensive and nuanced understanding of, and appreciation for the 2009 Family Smoking and Prevention Act, detailed knowledge of premarket review pathways, premarket tobacco product applications, substantial equivalence, and modified risk tobacco products, as well as experience in the interagency scientific review of regulatory documents related to tobacco product standards, testing and reporting of ingredients, and health information.”

There are several big tobacco issues that King and the CTP will be addressing this year and beyond. One of them is the FDA’s proposal to ban menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars. The other issue the CTP will be involved in is the regulation and handling of premium cigars.
