How this report will portray the premium cigar industry is unclear. In the webinar’s description, NASEM sets stage for what’s to come next week, showing that premium cigar consumption has increased since the Cigar Boom of the 1990s. The group also notes that premium cigars make up “a small percent of the total U.S. cigar market,” giving some hope the report could suggest premium cigars should be regulated differently from mass-market cigars and other tobacco products.
One group that spoke and engaged with NASEM as it composed this report was the Boutique Cigar Association of America (BCAA). In a Facebook post, the group noted that over the past fix months, the BCAA’s 7-person Board engaged with NASEM in regards to premium cigars and FDA regulations. Here’s part of what the BCAA shared in its post:
“We focused on very specific topics, and offered scientific evidence to support our opinions. Our Association may be new and small, however we work tirelessly to try to help all premium cigar companies. In the next week we shall see what NASEM has to say about the future of premium cigars and their recommendations on FDA regulations. NASEM advices [sic] our panel that our commentaries will be published and available for public viewing. We pray and hope that together we were able to shed some light on the topic of ‘What separates premium cigars from all other forms of combustible tobacco products?’ In the end, that’s all they care about, the science.”
When the report is released on March 10 at 11 a.m. eastern time, a free downloadable copy of the report and related resources will be available here. Also, the unveiling of this report will be done online in a webinar and those interested in watching the webinar can do so by clicking here to register.
