On March 10, 2022, the National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) will release its report “Premium Cigars: Patterns of Use, Marketing, and Health Effects.” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health tasked NASEM to examine the premium cigar industry, from the characteristics of premium cigars to the health effects associated with smoking hem and how they’re marketing.
Members of the committee responsible for writing the report will provide an overview of key findings, conclusions and recommendations.
Since the passing of the Deeming Rule in 2016, premium cigars have been regulated by the FDA, though those regulations have changed and remained mostly undefined due to various lawsuits that have temporarily exempted premium cigars from some of the regulations imposed on e-cigarettes and vapor manufacturers. This report’s findings will be reviewed and taken into consideration by the FDA as it works toward solidifying its handling of premium cigar regulations going forward.
