TOBACCO BUSINESS
JULY/AUGUST 2013
well. It’s like having variety in cigars or cigarettes—different scents
will appeal to different people.”
To help introduce customers to the product,TOP puts plenty of
information on its labels, and also offers informational pamphlets
with its displays. But by far themost effectiveway for retailers toboost
sales is to burn a candle in the store during peak shopping times, adds
Hoge, who says that each 13-ounce jar candle has an average burn
time of 70 hours.“Their sales increase exponentially. People come in
and notice that the store doesn’t have that tobacco smell.”
While candles remain its most popular product, the company
now also offers a wide range of odor-eliminating products, including
car fresheners, aerosol sprays and fabric sprays. TOP’s most recent
introduction is a reed diffuser. “It’s a bit like having a wide variety
of scents; you want a variety of products to meet a variety of needs,”
explains Hoge. “Sometimes you need a quick fix—a spray for your
car—and in other situations you want something that can work over
time, like a candle. The objective is to have a whole line designed
around the way a person lives his or her life.”

Burning Practices
• Keep wick trimmed to 1/8” at all times to ensure that your candle
flame does not smoke.
• If a black “mushroom” appears on your candle wick, extinguish your
candle, trim and relight as this mushrooming may cause your candle to
produce smoke.
• Keep burning candles within sight at all times; never leave a burning
candle unattended.
• Keep burning candles away from flammable materials and out of
reach of children and pets.
• Do not place candles on or near other heat sources, and never
directly on furniture.
• Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches or any
combustible material. Keep the wick centered.
• Keep your candle in an area free from drafts to discourage dripping
and smoking.
• If the flame of any candle seems too high, blow out the candle, trim
the wick and relight. This should correct the problem.
• Discontinue use when ½” of wax remains, as glass may shatter. Do
not refill jars with wax.
• Do not allow the flame to touch the side of the jars, as it may
become hot. Handle carefully.
• Minimize the wax left on the sides by burning the candle until
the wax pool reaches the edge of the jar. It’s normal for some wax
to remain, and the amount varies per color, fragrance and burning
environment.
• Extinguish candles with care as wax may splatter, then replace lid.
