A new bill introduced in the House of Representatives on April 27, 2017, by Republican Representative Duncan Hunter of California would exempt e-cigarettes and vapor products from the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) regulations. Known as the Cigarette Smoking Reduction and Electronic Vapor Alternatives Act, this bill would weaken the deeming rule introduced last year and would be viewed as a major victory for the vaping industry, valued at $4.4 billion in the U.S.
Reuters reports that Hunter’s bill would exempt vaping devices from many of the FDA’s regulations, including requirement that new vaping products be reviewed and approved by the FDA before entering the market. This is also an additional bill, not to be confused with the Cole-Bishop proposal introduced by Tom Cole of Oklahoma and Democrat Sanford Bishop of Georgia. Hunter’s bill goes even further than the Cole-Bishop bill as it brings the regulation of the vaping industry to a complete stop.
