TOBACCO OUTLET BUSINESS
JULY/AUGUST 2012
boating and fishing volunteers to go
over their fishing excursion plans and
enjoy grilled pork chops, sweet potatoes
and green beans provided by Murphy
Brown Farms, which has been cooking
and donating the volunteer meal to
MAD volunteers for the past five years.
At 5 a.m. the next morning more
than 300 active-duty, guard and
reservist members were matched up
with 74 participating fishing boats for
four hours on the water. Some of the
boats went far offshore and caught
mahi-mahi, grouper, snapper, sea bass
and cobia, while others stayed closer
to shore and caught Spanish mackerel,
bluefish, flounder, trout and redfish.
“This year’s event was our smoothest
yet,” reports Scott Krieger, the
Volunteer Boater Chairman for MAD
who organized the event. “With so
many boats and people that need to
be matched up to available spots on
those boats, it is always a challenging
job juggling the boat assignments and
schedule. But when the first troops
arrive in the morning and we get to
express our appreciation for what they
do in person, it is all worthwhile. I am
thankful for all the volunteers that help
me at each event.”
Among these were Rouseco’s Team
Early Out, which hosted service
members Ronnie Cunningham, Ryan
Squire and Kyle Swain. “The day started
off with strong southwest winds around
25 miles per hour so we opted to cobia
fish inside Barden’s Inlet for a few
hours,” explains Martin. “Around 9:00
a.m. the winds subsided enough that
we decided to run offshore and try for
some dolphin fish. The guys had missed
one cobia and released several stingrays,
so they were ready for some offshore
action.” During the next few hours, the
team boated eight good-sized dolphin
fish and one wahoo to cap off a good
day of fishing along North Carolina’s
crystal coast. At 2:15 p.m., the team
pulled in its lines, secured the gear and
