Support is growing in the Senate for premium cigar exemption from FDA regulation. Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey (Republican) is the latest to pledge support for premium cigars to be exempt from FDA regulation.
Toomey joins 16 other members of the U.S. Senate to support S. 294, known as the Traditional Cigar Manufacturing and Small Business Jobs Preservation Act of 2017. Currently, 11 Republicans and six Democrats support this bill.
Senators Marco Rubio (Republican) and Bill Nelson (Democrat) introduced S. 294 in February 2017. Currently, it is being reviewed by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. The bill is similar to Florida’s Rep. Bill Posey (Republican) H.R. 564 that was introduced in January and currently is under review by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
This is a positive trend of support of pro-cigar bills on Capitol Hill, joining the recent bill passed by the House of Representatives last week. Click here to read more about that bill.
