TOBACCO BUSINESS
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013
Tobacco Plus
Convenience Expo
Sure, trade shows are an excellent opportunity to explore new
ways of doing business and learn about new products, but let’s
face it—confronting a trade show floor teeming with booth
after boothof products can also be overwhelming.Fortunately,
there are ways to make the experience less daunting. Here are
a few:
Make aHit List.
Before you even get inside a plane, train or car
to head for Vegas, make a list of your objectives. Maybe you’re
looking to add SKUs in a particular category—say, premium
cigars. Or maybe your goal is to find out the latest news on the
FDA’s plan to regulate e-cigarettes. Identifying your priorities
will enable you to look through the list of exhibitors and
educational seminars and plan your days accordingly.
Take Notes.
Before you pocket that business card, take a
minute to write a few key words on the back that will remind
you why you wanted it. Sound silly? When you unearth dozens
of cards a few weeks after the show, you may find yourself
hard-pressed to remember who’s who.
Meet the Competition.
Chances are, your peers in the
industry are struggling with the same business challenges that
you are facing. Comparing notes is a great way to gain insight
and discuss the pros and cons of various approaches.
Make Time for Learning Opportunities.
While educational
seminars are rarely the primary reason for people attending
trade shows, they can offer invaluable information on boosting
profits and managing your business, particularly in a heavily
regulated industry such as tobacco.
Fun.
You’re in a fabulous city surrounded by people who share
many of the same business interests and challenges as you
have—take some time to enjoy yourself!
• What’s Going on in Tobacco Retailing?
Drawing upon extensive analytic and consulting
research,David Bishop,managing partner of Balvor,

where you’ll find plenty to enjoy during your
downtime—from exploring its world famous
casinos and restaurants to enjoying spectacular
shows. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about
and experience innovative tobacco products and
accessories and to explore ways to grow your
