tracks tobacco in the news.

…A book titled
Bad Acts: The Racketeering Case Against
the Tobacco Industry
written by former U.S. Department
of Justice lawyer Sharon Eubanks and University of
California at San Francisco professor Stanton Glantz, to
be published by the APHA Press in May 2012, describes
the DOJ’s lawsuit against cigarette makers including “the
politics, the litigation, [and] the behavior of the industry
and its lawyers.”

…On March 13, Brazil’s National Health Surveillance
Agency (Anvisa) announced a
flavoring ban
, including
menthol, on tobacco products sold in Brazil, giving
manufacturers 18 months from the publication date of
Anvisa’s decision to remove flavored cigarettes from the
market and 24 months to remove other flavored tobacco
products from all retail shelves.
Harm Reduction:
…A Legislative Resolution introduced in Nebraska
would call on the legislature to recognize tobacco
harm reduction strategies
as an additional policy
choice to assist cigarette smokers in quitting (LEG12-
12).
The Wall Street Journal
reports that as an
increasing number of American smokers are turning
to electronic cigarettes, annual sales of which,
according to industry estimates, have grown to
between $250 million and $500 million since the
product entered the U.S. five years ago, a growing
number of States are considering
e-cigarette
restrictions
. Potential regulations on the sale and use
of the device in the absence of federal regulations are
intensifying the public health debate over the fast-
growing alternative to smoking, with some calling for
tightly regulating e-cigarettes because they do not
think enough is known about their health effects, and
others, like Elaine Keller of the Consumer Advocates
