IPCPR to Permit Smoking
All required permits for the use of tobacco on the convention hall have been obtained.
Participants at the 2012 IPCPR
Annual
Convention
and
International Trade Show to be
held in Florida in August will be
able to smoke in the convention
hall, says Bill Spann, CEO of
IPCPR. “IPCPR has permission to
conduct business in the state of
Florida and to permit smoking in
the convention hall,” he asserts.
“Any rumors you may have heard
to the contrary are false.”
Spann went on to share the
following information that may
be useful for exhibitors and
attendees:
Florida has a very strict use
tax on all free samples provided
at trade shows. The tax is 6.5
percent of the
exhibitors’ cost
of
the sample, not the retail value,
which will help mitigate any
unexpected costs. In our extensive
conversations with the Florida
Department of Revenue, we do not
qualify for any exemptions.
For cigarettes, the general
rule in Florida is that all cigarettes
have a Florida tax stamp on each
package evidencing that they
came through a Florida licensed
cigarette stamping wholesaler.
This indicates the Florida Excise
Cigarette Taxes have been paid.
On any other tobacco products,
such as smokeless tobacco, pipe
tobacco and roll your own cigarette
tobacco, the excise tax is collected
and submitted by the Other Tobacco
Products (OTP) wholesalers licensed
by the state, and there is no tax stamp
evidencing payment of the state OTP
excise tax on them. As such, it is very
important to maintain the record of
where they were obtained prior to
bringing them to the trade show.
We are still working with
the Florida Division of Alcoholic
Beverages & Tobacco excise tax
bureau to fine-tune any procedure
they want us to follow regarding
the state excise tax and surcharge
tax on cigarettes and other tobacco
products being brought into the
trade show. When we have obtained
their guidance we will let you know
(if there are any issues with you
purchasing all cigarettes and other
tobacco products in Florida you are
bringing to the trade show).
Spann urges anyone planning or
considering planning to attend the
show to contact his office with any
questions or need for assistance.
