TheAWMAs2011Showattractedmoreattendeesthananyshowthegrouphasheldsincetherecessionbegan.Morethan1500peopleparticipatedintheLasVegaseventwithattendanceupmorethan29percentoverthepreviousyear.ThenumberofexhibitorsandamountofsquarefeetofexhibitspacealsooutpacedthepastveyearsduetotheadditionofthenewFoodservicePavilionandmoreexhibitorsparticipatingforthersttime.WearethrilledwiththeresultsandthelevelofparticipationandengagementofourmembersintheshowsaidKeithCanningman-agingpartnerPineStateTradingCo.and2011AWMAchairman.Twoyearsagoourboardapprovedastrategicplantoreinventourannualeventsothatitprovidesmorevaluetobothattendeesandex-hibitors.Sincethenwehavecompletelyrevampedtheeducationalprogrambyaddingmoresessionsonindustryissuesandbestprac-ticesinvitedleadingretailerstospeakaboutandsharetheirinsightsandaddednewcategoriestotheexpoincludingaFoodservicePa-viliontoshowcasefood-serviceequipmentproductsandservicesagrowthcategoryweareallextremelyinterestedin.TheFoodservicePavilionfeatured35companiesmostexhibitingattheAWMAShowforthersttime.Thedistributoristhekeycom-ponentbetweenthefood-servicesupplierandtheconsumerandtheAWMAShowprovidesadirectconnectionwiththesedecision-mak-erssaidJerryRykerexecutivevicepresidentofbusinessdevelop-mentatLandMarkProducts.Distributorsareourpartnersandwearelisteningtotheirbusinessissuessothatwecanrespond.AWMAs2012ShowtobeheldFeb.15-17attheParisHotelinLasVegascontinuestoevolvetomeettheneedsofdistributorsandre-tailers.Newfor2012willbeanOperationsPavilionontheshowoorthatfeaturestechnologyproductsandserviceswarehousemanage-mentsystemsandtransportationandotherkeyservicesthatsupportdistributoroperations.OtherpavilionswillincludeFoodserviceandCandySnackswiththebalanceoftheexpofeaturingthelatestintobaccoOTPnoveltyandothercorecategories.OurgoalistocontinuouslyimprovetheshoweachyearandndmorewaystoaddvalueforexhibitorsandattendeessaidScottRammingerAWMApresidentandCEO.Ourpost-showsurveyre-sultsindicatethatwearegoingintherightdirectionwithamajorityofbothexhibitorsanddistributorsratingthe2011showasprovidingmorevaluethanpreviousshows.Overallattendancewasup20percentoverthepreviousyearandmorethan80percentofexhibitorsindicatedthattheshowmetorexceededtheirbusinessobjectivesreportstheAWMA.InformationabouttheAWMAs2012Showcanbefoundatwww.AWMASHOW.com.notkeeppeoplefromsmokinginbarsdespitetheagencysclaimsthatbusinessesarerecep-tivetotherulesestablishedbysmoke-freelawsenactedinMay2010.Initsrstyearthestatewidesmokingbanatrestaurantsandbarswasviolated1491timestheMDCHsurveysaid.TwoestablishmentswereorderedcloseduntiltheymetregulationsbuttheMDCHsaidtherehasbeenahighcomplianceratedespite620violationsand117citationsbeingissued.R.J.ReynoldsTobaccoCo.timedthelaunchofitsnewsmoke-freeCamelSnusadvertisingcampaigntooccurrightwhenNewYorkCityssmokingbanhitthestreetsinMay.NewYorksnewestantismokinglegislationwhichtookef-fectMay23banssmokingincityparksbeach-espublicplazasandboardwalks.Thesmoke-freeCamelSnusadswhichwereslatedtoappearinandawidevarietyofmajordailynewspaperssaidNYCsmokersenjoythefreedomwithouttheameandNYCsmokersriseabovethebanaccordingtotheNationalAssociationofConvenienceStores.NATOsTomBriantrecentlyreportedanincidentwhereatobaccooutletretailersreceivedawarningletterfromtheFDAcitingafailuretoensurethatnopersonyoungerthan18yearsofageispresentorpermittedtoenterhisadult-onlystore.Briantreportsthattheletterwentontostatethatsignagestatingthatonlyadultsareallowedinisinsufcientandthatitisyourresponsibilitytotakeappropriatemeasuressuchascheckingidenticationuponen-trytoensurethatnopersonyoungerthan18yearsofageispresentorpermittedtoentertheestablish-mentatanytime.AWMAShowaHitCamelSnusAdLeveragesNYCsNewSmokingBanFDACrackingDownonAdult-Onlycontinuedfrompage12TOBACCOOUTLETBUSINESSJULYAUGUST2011JULYAUGUST2011HigHligHts14NEWSTRENDSAttendancewasupattheAmericanWholesaleMarketersAssociationsFebruary2011Show.USATodayTheWallStreetJournal
